Suicide Epidemic Among Teens
Suicide Epidemic Among Teens
For a teenager to be so unbearably unhappy that he would choose to kill himself is something that is almost too painful for a parent to think about. But with the increasing prevalence of teen suicide, no parent can afford to ignore the possibility. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death for high school students.
Kids look at this world without much hope for a brighter future. And many are choosing suicide as their solution. When I was in high school — a school with 3,000 students — I never knew of any of my peers committing suicide. And even working in Young Life after college, suicide among teens was a very unusual event that we rarely heard of.
Fact is, before the 1960′s, suicide by adolescents happened only rarely; but today, nearly one in ten teens contemplates suicide, and over 500,000 attempt it each year. While suicide rates for all other ages have dropped, suicides among teens have nearly tripled.
Between the sexes, teen boys are more than four times as likely to commit suicide as girls. But girls are known to think about and attempt suicide about twice as often as boys. The difference is the method; girls attempt suicide by overdosing on drugs or cutting themselves, and thankfully most are found in time and rescued. Boys tend to use more lethal methods, such as firearms, hanging, or jumping from heights.
The Warning Signs
Teen suicide is a teen’s last attempt to ease the pain, to make a statement, or it is just a wrong decision giving a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Teens don’t see the bigger picture; they only see the “right now.” They get wrapped up in the emotions of the moment and tend to only think about a week ahead — that’s all. And when you mix immature short-sightedness with feelings of utter hopelessness, some kids think they cannot live with the pain another day. Other kids who contemplate suicide are filled with rage over teasing by their peers or the way they feel they’ve been mistreated by family. They choose suicide as a tragic form of payback.
That reminds me of Kerri. She was the “perfect kid.” She loved church, was involved in mission projects, was adored by her brothers, and stayed away from sex, drugs, and alcohol. Her parents allowed their stunning daughter to date at age 16. But on her first date, the guy tried to go too far, and Kerri was shocked and stunned by the encounter. Her parents asked about the date, and she shared what had happened. Kerri’s father, in the heat of the moment, blamed Kerri. His words verbally crucified his daughter. When Kerri stated that what this boy did made her want to commit suicide, her dad said she didn’t have the guts to do it. Feeling devalued and misunderstood, Kerri decided to show her dad how gutsy she really was. She got into her parents’ medicine cabinet and took 30 sleeping pills. Kerri’s parents had no idea what the fight had done to their daughter until dad came upstairs to apologize, found Kerri asleep, and couldn’t wake her. She awoke a few hours later after being rushed to the emergency room and having her stomach pumped. She wasn’t rebellious; she was just sending her dad a message. If she showed her dad that he was wrong about her being too afraid to kill herself, she could also prove he was also wrong about the way she handled her date.
Like Kerri, most teens contemplating suicide give some type of warning to friends or loved ones ahead of time. It can be subtle and or it can be blurted out in a rage. Either way, it’s important for parents to watch for those threats or warning signs and take them seriously, so their teen can get the help they need.
Parents should be aware of these other warning signs that their teenager may be having suicidal thoughts:
They may begin to isolate themselves, pulling away from friends or family
They may no longer participate in what was their favorite things or activities
They may have recently developed trouble thinking clearly
They may have changes in their personality (darker, more anxious, or non-caring)
They may be experiencing changes in eating or sleeping habits
They may talk about suicide or death in general
They may express feelings of hopelessness or guilt
They may exhibit self-destructive behavior (substance abuse, dangerous driving, recklessness, excessive risk taking)
They may have changes in their personal hygiene and appearance
They may complain about anxiety-related physical problems (stomachaches, headaches, hives, fatigue, blurred vision)
They may have difficulty accepting praise or rewards.
If you see any of these signs in your teen, talk to them about your concerns and seek professional help from a physician or a qualified mental health professional. With the support of family and appropriate treatment, teenagers who are suicidal can heal and return to more healthy thinking.
If you ever hear your teen say, “I’m going to kill myself,” or “I’m going to commit suicide,” always take such statements seriously and immediately seek assistance from a qualified mental health professional. Don’t walk away. Don’t wait. Get them to a hospital immediately, even if they don’t want to go or say they were just fooling with you.
Hospitalization is needed whenever a teen is a danger to himself. Extreme cutting, bizarre behavior, extreme depression, suicidal thoughts, or excessive drug or alcohol use coupled with emotional issues are just a few of the symptoms that might warrant hospitalization. A parent shouldn’t hesitate to hospitalize their child if they fear for their life. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
It’s also important to be proactive in regard to making sure that the main tools of committing suicide are not readily available to a suicidal teen. For boys, lock up guns in the house so they are not accessible. For girls, monitor razor blades and make sure drugs like sleeping pills and pain killers are not accessible in your house. You may need to regularly go through her dresser, purse, backpack and closet to make sure she isn’t storing any herself that she’s bought or gotten from friends. And when a suicidal girl is taking a bath, knock on the door periodically to get a response.
Be Sure to Talk About It
If you see mild warning signs, asking your teen if he or she is depressed or thinking about suicide can be helpful. Such questions filled with love and concern will provide assurance that you care and will give them the chance to talk about their problems. Get them to commit to you that if they ever do have those thoughts, they’ll let you or someone else know. If your teen doesn’t feel comfortable talking with you, suggest a more neutral person, such as another relative, a counselor, a pastor, a coach, or your child’s doctor.
It’s important to keep the lines of communication open and express your concern, support, and love. If your teen confides in you their loss of hope or control of their life, show that you take those concerns seriously. It’s important not to minimize, mock or discount what your teen is going through, as this can increase his or her sense of hopelessness.
Depression Can Lead to Suicide
Each year, thousands of at-risk teens are diagnosed with clinical depression. Most of the signs of depression are the same as suicide warning signs, so depression needs your attention. If left untreated or ignored, it can be a devastating illness for the teen and their family and it can lead to suicide.
There are different treatments for depression, but keep in mind that teen depression is often not treated the same as depression in adults. There are medications available to help teens with depression, but typically they are needed only temporarily. Treatment of teen depression must involve regular counseling and close supervision, since some medical treatments can make the depression more severe before they take full effect and begin helping. The good news is that most teens grow out of depression in a few years.
A depressed teen may have been having relational problems at home or is being picked on or bullied at school. But usually severe depression comes from another problem in their life such as an eating disorder, drug addiction, physical abuse, loss, or medical condition. Some teens just need to eat a better diet and get more sleep at night, but depression and suicidal thoughts are not something I’d recommend anyone treat with home remedies. A depressed teen generally doesn’t have the ability or strength to solve their own depression. Attempting to help “shake them out of it” can cause the depression and despair to deepen, since it only serves to point out their own failure to improve their life.
What’s A Parent To Do?
If you are the parent of a depressed or suicidal teen, it’s important that you try to understand them, listen to them and try not to be accusing. Respect your teen’s opinions and problems and avoid blaming them or yourself for their feelings. Being a teenager is hard today and your child is justified in their feelings, even if you may not agree or understand. When you realize this, you can help your child.
Remain in contact; even if you no longer have any control over your child’s life. It can make all the difference. Do what you can to bring family members and the friends they’ve abandoned back into their life. Get out family pictures and videos to show them better times.
No matter what mischief your child is doing in their life, hope is needed more than judgment at this time. So encourage them by getting them out to experience good things that can add abundance to their life. Sometimes it helps to ask a positive-thinking relative to take them into their home for a time to give the teen a change of scenery. Get them on a good diet. Get them outdoors to soak in some vitamin D. Regular exercise really helps. And find a loving pet that they can take care. Having the responsibility for a pet can sometimes cause a teen to think twice before taking themselves out of the picture. It also gives them a “pal” to talk to who is totally loyal and non-condemning. Finally, plan fun events several months in the future that they can look forward to, and keep reminding them of that date. For teenagers, the point is to create a bridge to help them get past this period of hopelessness and into a better mindset.
Please don’t be slow in getting professional help. I’ve seen many hundreds of teenagers who have become different people from medication designed to correct a deficiency in their developing brain. Others are helped by regular counseling to deal with their inner issues, or with treatment for their drug habit or other addictions in their life. Get the help your teen needs, before they become a statistic.

Money For Teens
Teen Job Basics
1) For many of these ideas a credit card or paypal account will be req uired to make money so make a deal with your parents to use their credit card. Many parents will be hesitant to initiate a deal like this; reassure them that you will pay them back and keep a balance sheet to record the profits and expenses that accumulate.
2) Have no Self-Conscience. Putting yourself out there will be of great import for success. If you want to make money you cannot concern yourself with what people may think about your methods, just think about your deep pockets and their shallow ones with money for teens.
3) You have to be willing to put effort into what you do. Effort conquers ability.
The Money Making Methods
Money For Teens #1 : Caddying
If you live near a golf club then there is no better and more simple way to make money as a teen than caddying, and you get a workout. All caddying requires in most areas is one or two, two hour training courses to become certified. If you can get a job at a country club many members will tip around per bag per round. It is highly suggested that you learn the course you work at quite well, so that you are able to assist your golfer and receive a higher tip. Also if you become studdly enough to build a reputation, members will ask for you specifically, and the more business the more money, so work at it and you could make up to ,000 in a summer. Use this link to find a local golf club Find Local Golf Courses.
Money For Teens #2 : Landscaping
A kid can do landscaping jobs starting very young, possibly even in pre-teen years. Ask your parents if you can mow their lawn and have them pay you. Argue that you are cheaper than the landscaping company they pay for. Landscaping may also entail other household jobs like painting or laying mulch, just offer your assistance for a small price. Don’t stop at your parents, ask neighbors and post flyers, especially if you live in a walking community where houses are very easy to get to. Landscaping is a great job to do with a friend and can be quite fun and very simple. First schedule an appointment for an estimate and then if the customer agrees schedule a time to do the labor. Customers will pay you a much higher wage if you supply your own equipment so arrive prepared.
Money For Teens #3 : Manage Landscaping
This job takes a little more smarts and can be more of a challenge, but when pulled off successfully you will become loaded and have all your friends looking up to you. You may think this is an impossibility at the age of 16, but I have seen in my town alone two different kids run a landscaping business and make more than ,000 in just a summer. I suggest that you start off by learning the ropes of landscaping, mow your lawn and then start mowing your neighbor’s lawns, try to get some painting jobs as well. As you get more and more business, save your money, hire friends to work for you at a low hourly wage and continue to expand your business. If you get enough money buy your own lawn mower, a cheap truck, and a trailer. If you cannot drive yet you may want to move on from your friends and hire adults. I know a 15 year old with two 35 year old employees and they landscape for more than 30 houses a week. Also with that truck you can buy a plow and start a winter plowing business.
Money For Teens #4 : Make a Website
That’s what you are reading right now, a website that I made to make money while helping you to make money. Making or running a website is not very difficult with all the new programs that can help you and all the material online to guide you. Ebay(link it) is a great place to buy websites that have already been established as well as flippa.com(link it). I will also list some host websites and materials that can help you learn about how to build and run a website. This idea has the most potential for huge success but also the most risk for failure. Luckily the monetary investment is quite small. If you can get good at making websites quickly, you can sell a few hours’ work for hundreds to thousands of dollars. Check out the site below for guidance.

Money For Teens #5 : Sell On Ebay
You can do this at any age and it will make your parents happy. Ask them what junk that has built up around the house you can sell. Selling on Ebay is super cheap and has a very high success rate. You would be surprised at what some people will buy. You can make a couple thousand dollars in this way, but you will eventually run out of supply. If you find yourself successful, you can find more supply by buying wholesale items and selling them individually or by going to thrift shops and finding underpriced items. I have heard numerous stories of people finding Scotty Cameron golf putters for like and realizing that they sell for hundreds on Ebay. Craigslist is another great source of merchandise that you can buy cheap and sell high. Quick hint, buy diabetic testing supplies on Craigslist and sell them on ebay, a great way to make money as odd as it sounds.
Money For Teens #6 : Create an Ebay Business
Why limit yourself to selling your own stuff? You can set up a business in which you sell other people’s stuff on ebay for a cut. Go to local businesses and ask them if they need assistance in selling any old equipment that they no longer use, or post flyers advertising your ability to sell on ebay. Take advantage of people’s stupidity thinking that selling on ebay is difficult. And on top of all that, there is no risk involved, the products are not even your own.
Money For Teens #7 : Sell Candy at School
The profit margins for selling candy at school are huge, often 100%. This business can be tackled in many ways, the easiest is selling gum. Everyone loves to have gum, especially for the weekends, so Fridays are the best day to whip out the gum, especially if your school does not allow it to be chewed. The most profitable way to sell gum is each individually wrapped piece. A pack of gum usually contains 12-15 pieces. If you sell each individual piece for $ .25 then you make + a pack or you can sell the whole pack for . Either way in a big high school you can make + every Friday throughout the school year, thats an extra ,500 of income. Although, the real jackpot comes Monday through Thursday; not many kids will buy the regular old candy because it frankly is neither essential nor addictive nor interesting. What kids will buy is asian candy. There is a candy called Hi-chew, in both a cheap American version, and a more expensive Japanese version, that is an absolute delight to eat and is almost addictive. Kids will go crazy for this stuff, especially if there isn’t a china town around or Super 88 where they can buy it themselves. Because people will first be skeptical, buy a fair amount, they are sold as individually wrapped chews in packs of 10 or 12 for about .50, and give everyone a free 2 pieces. That’s all they need and they will be hooked. I was in 5th grade and I made in a week selling this stuff to a grade of 56 boys. This candy is so good people will literally be willing to pay for a single pack of 12 pieces. You will easily be able to sell this for about .50 to .00 a pack and make a killing. The american version sells for about $ .60 and can be sold for a bout .50 to .00 and is also very profitable.
Money For Teens #8 : Start a Clothe Printing Business/Screenprinting
Cool Custom apparel for sports teams and individuals are in high demand at all schools and in all towns. (place links for how-to and deigns and such) People love having unique shirts with good sayings on them to show that they are on a certain team. For example, the wrestling team might want to get unofficial shirts for the team that say varsity wrestling for whatever school and then have a wrestling slogan, you could provide those shirts. Starting a custom printing business has huge profit potential as things will usually be ordered in bulk and the prices can be jacked up for customization. Besides a simple hot press the only other requirement is designs, so all you need is an artist. The apparel itself can be ordered after you receive a customer order to reduce risk of overstock. Also if you can successfully brand yourself, you can set up shop at sporting events like wrestling tournaments and make custom shirts, shorts, and sweatshirts for the events and charge a hefty price because there is no other way to get shirts that say “Beast of the East”, except for at that event. Lax pinnies are also taking off in popularity, and if you could get yourself into the business of making custom lacrosse pinnies, which no one does well, you could become extremely successful.
Money For Teens #9 : Start a Car Detailing Business
A business like this, very similar to a landscaping business, can be especially fun and effective because not only do you receive wads of cash, but also you get to be the boss of your friends. I would argue that this is the best and easiest cash business to set up as a teen. All you need is a few employees and very limited supplies; a little bit of car wax, a car vacuum, and cu-tips may even suffice. Cleaning out the crevices in the leather where crap accumulates with cu-tips will definitely earn you some extra dough. Good car detailers get paid around 0, so if you can do even a decent job you should make per detailing. You can set up shop in the parking garages of malls and other places where people stop for a decent amount of time and pay the building owners a cut or just rent out the space. I’m telling you this can make so much money. A few kids in my town did this and made thousands upon thousands of dollars, this is especially successful in nice areas.
Money For Teens #10 : Buy Old Arcade Games
Assuming you don’t live in a mob infested area where all the cash businesses are controlled, go ahead a buy a pinball machine or deer hunter game and you could make some great money. I suggest you watch Kinghuman’s video on youtube about this idea (I will link below), but he claims that he did it as a kid and has inspired others to do so, and some kids claim to make 0 a week from just a couple machines. All you really need to do is find a good used arcade game and find a low class restaurant (pizza place) that has a bit of extra space. Ask the owners if you can plant your game in their restaurant and give them 50% (negotiable) of the revenue. Then one day a week drop by the place with the key and collect your easy money. After the initial investment you have basically no monetary obligations, although you may want to look into some cheap insurance in case someone decides to smash your game up. An excellent part of this business model is the ability to expand. This lends itself extremely well to the concept of using your profits to reinvest and grow. Soon enough you may own arcade machines all over the area and have employees going to collect your weekly earnings of thousands of dollars.
Money For Teens #11 : Investing In Stocks
Investing in stocks has been my most successful money making method; however, this only works well once you have already amassed some dough. Trading stock requires a few things that you will need your parents for, either a stock broker or an online trading account with Etrade or Fidelity. On top of that, you will need to learn what to look for in the financials of a company to decide on your investments, but to start you can always go with the steady movers, such as Apple, Microsoft, and GE. Tip #1, look at a company’s earnings and compare them to other companies in the same sector. For more I suggest reading some of the material I read, which I have listed below, also ask your parents if they have any experience.
Money For Teens #12 : Create Websites For Businesses
Many small, local businesses, no matter where you live, are looking to attach a website to their business. If you can learn pretty simply how to design a neat looking website, then you can go to your local businesses and have them pay you a fee to make them a website. They should be willing to take your discounted rate over a professional’s and once you become successful you can create your own website making business for other businesses to use. You will have to market yourself and do some research and possibly go business to business to try to sell your service, but this job will pay well.
Money For Teens #13 : Deliver Pizzas
If you have a car and a pretty clean driving record, you can make some quick extra money delivering pizzas, call up your local pizza place and check it out.
Money For Teens #14: Waiting Tables
If you are a sociable person this opportunity should really speak to you because nicer people get better tips. The nicer the place the higher the tips so aim high. It really is a pretty easy job and good waiters can make some pretty good money.
Money For Teens #15 : The Classic…Babysit, Babysit, Babysit
The classic teen job, babysitting, it may be boring and take up your free nights, but a good few hours of babysitting can pay off. Babysitters tend to get paid between 10 and 20 dollars an hour, so if you can babysit 4 hours a week and make an extra a week, thats 20 a year. That works. This is especially effective in richer neighborhoods where parents like to go out a lot and will pay high wages to their babysitters. Just make sure that when you walk in you shake both parents’ hands, look them in the eye, and smile.
Money For Teens #16 : Start A Babysitting Business
Manage a babysitting business. Get a bunch of your friends to work for you and find clients for them and then take a cut of the earnings. Post flyers all around and market your business, then when a parent calls and asks for a time, find one of your employees willing to take that time. The only issue here is trust, you have to figure out a way to make the parents trust any one of your employees with their child. Possibly have bios ready for all your employees and guarantee trustworthiness. Also read one of those above handbooks so you really know what you are doing.
Money For Teens #17 : Pet Sitting / Start A pet sitting business
This one pretty much goes hand-in-hand with babysitting, pet sitting has the potential to be extremely profitable and there is less competition. Ask your friends who have pets if they ever need assistance and offer your service. All you really have to do is walk their dog, maybe feed their cat and just do whatever you want in the general vicinity of the pet. Using the same business model as a babysitting business, pet sitting offers the opportunity to expand into a legitimate business.
Money For Teens #18 : Have A Garage Sale
Pretty simple, have a garage sale. I am sure your parents would be happy to get rid of plenty of old junk and you can do it for them while turning a profit. This method makes you quick cash and does not require too much effort.
Money For Teens #19 : Buy Bargains From Garage Sales to Sell on Ebay/Craigslist
You can find amazing deals at garage sales because most people just want to get rid of their junk, yet some other people will find that junk valuable. An opportunity arises from this difference, you have the chance to flip many items for a profit using ebay or craigslist and many other item selling sites.
Money For Teens #20 : Ref/Umpire For Kid Sports
Reffing and Umping for kids sports is a great way to make extra money when you are young on top of another job. The requirement is typically to attend a short class or two to receive your certification and then you are ready for hire. You can usually start this as early as 7th grade for reffing soccer games and high school for umping baseball games. It is an easy way to make some extra cash every week, making -40 per game.
Money For Teens #21 : Learn To DJ
Learning to DJ is an excellent and fairly easy way to make a very good amount of money as a teen. All you really need is a decent ear for music; you do not need to know how to scratch on turntables or any of that fancy stuff when you are young. Mostly you need to be able to put together playlists on your computer with songs that are fun and sound good together or you need to be able to take song requests from kids and click play on your computer. I have seen 9th grade students DJ at bar/bat mitzvahs and make a good amount of money from their employers. If you live in a Jewish area this is an idea you should highly consider because you have a great opportunity to exploit the bar/bat mitzvah parties. And once you become skilled you can break off from whatever company you work for and begin your own, supplying your own equipment and keeping all the profits. DJs often get paid hundreds of dollars just to play music at teen dances. Also with the rise of electronic music DJs are starting to take over the music industry so this is a great feeder job into the music industry if you plan to pursue that type of career.
Using these methods I made a great deal of money in my teenage years, and I now offer these ideas to you with your success in mind. If you want a more expanded list, visit Money For Teens, my website. The website also includes many links to helpful materials relating to the ideas that will help you succeed. Suicide Attempts Link Statistics About Teen Suicide and Teen Depression
Suicide Attempts Link Statistics About Teen Suicide and Teen Depression
Teen suicide is becoming more common every year in South America. In fact, only car accidents and homicides (murders) kill more people between the ages of 18 and 30, making suicide the third leading cause of death in teens and overall in youths ages 14 to 22 years old.
Thinking About Suicide It’s common for teens to think about death to some degree. Teens’ thinking capabilities have matured in a way that allows them to think more deeply – about their existence in the world, the meaning of life, and other profound questions and ideas. Unlike kids, teens realize that death is permanent. They may begin to consider spiritual or philosophical questions such as what happens after people die. To some, death, and even suicide, may seem poetic (consider Romeo and Juliet, for example). To others, death may seem frightening or be a source of worry. For many, death is mysterious and beyond our human experience and understanding.
Thinking about suicide goes beyond normal ideas teens may have about death and life. Wishing to be dead, thinking about suicide, or feeling helpless and hopeless about how to solve life’s problems are signs that a teen may be at risk – and in need of help and support. Beyond thoughts of suicide, actually making a plan or carrying out a suicide attempt is even more serious.
What makes some teens begin to think about suicide – and even worse, to plan or do something with the intention of ending their own lives? One of the biggest factors is depression. Suicide attempts are usually made when a person is seriously depressed or upset. A teen who is feeling suicidal may see no other way out of problems, no other escape from emotional pain, or no other way to communicate their desperate unhappiness.
The Link Between Depression and Suicide
The majority of suicide attempts and suicide deaths happen among teens with depression. Consider these statistics about teen suicide and teen depression: about 1% of all teens attempts suicide and about 1% of those suicide attempts results in death (that means about 1 in 10,000 teens dies from suicide). But for adolescents who have depressive illnesses, the rates of suicidal thinking and behavior are much higher. Most teens who have depression think about suicide, and between 15% and 30% of teens with serious depression who think about suicide go on to make a suicide attempt.
Keep in mind that most of the time for most teens depression is a passing mood. The sadness, loneliness, grief, and disappointment we all feel at times are normal reactions to some of the struggles of life. With the right support, some resilience, an inner belief that there will be a brighter day, and decent coping skills, most teens can get through the depressed mood that happens occasionally when life throws them a curve ball.
But sometimes depression doesn’t lift after a few hours or a few days. Instead it lasts, and it can seem too heavy to bear. When someone has a depressed or sad mood that is intense and lingers almost all day, almost every day for 2 weeks or more, it may be a sign that the person has developed major depression. Major depression, sometimes called clinical depression, is beyond a passing depressed mood – it is the term mental health professionals use for depression that has become an illness in need of treatment. Another form of serious depression is called bipolar disorder, which includes extreme low moods (major depression) as well as extreme high moods (these are called manic episodes).
Though children can experience depression, too, teens are much more vulnerable to major depression and bipolar illness. Hormones and sleep cycles, which both change dramatically during adolescence, have an effect on mood and may partly explain why teens (especially girls) are particularly prone to depression. Believe it or not, as many as 20% of all teens have had depression that’s this severe at some point. The good news is that depression is treatable – most teens get better with the right help.
It’s not hard to see why serious depression and suicide are connected. Serious depression (with both major depression and bipolar illness) involves a long-lasting sad mood that doesn’t let up, and a loss of pleasure in things you once enjoyed. It also involves thoughts about death, negative thoughts about oneself, a sense of worthlessness, a sense of hopelessness that things could get better, low energy, and noticeable changes in appetite or sleep.
Depression also distorts a person’s viewpoint, allowing them to focus only on their failures and disappointments and to exaggerate these negative things. Depressed thinking can convince someone there is nothing to live for. The loss of pleasure that is part of depression can seem like further evidence that there’s nothing good about the present. The hopelessness can make it seem like there will be nothing good in the future; helplessness can make it seem like there’s nothing you can do to change things for the better. And the low energy that is part of depression can make every problem (even small ones) seem like too much to handle.
When major depression lifts because a person gets the proper therapy or treatment, this distorted thinking is cleared and they can find pleasure, energy, and hope again. But while someone is seriously depressed, suicidal thinking is a real concern. When teens are depressed, they often don’t realize that the hopelessness they feel can be relieved and that hurt and despair can be healed.
What Else Puts Teens at Risk for Suicide?
In addition to depression, there are other emotional conditions that can put teens at greater risk for suicide – for example, girls and guys with conduct disorder are at higher risk. This may be partly because teens with conduct disorder have problems with aggression and may be more likely than other teens to act in aggressive or impulsive ways to hurt themselves when they are depressed or under great stress. The fact that many teens with conduct disorder also have depression may partly explain this, too. Having both serious depression and conduct disorder increases a teen’s risk for suicide.
Substance abuse problems also put teens at risk for suicidal thinking and behavior. Alcohol and some drugs have depressive effects on the brain. Misuse of these substances can bring on serious depression, especially in teens prone to depression because of their biology, family history, or other life stressors.
Besides depressive effects, alcohol and drugs alter a person’s judgement. They interfere with the ability to assess risk, make good choices, and think of solutions to problems. Many suicide attempts occur when a teen is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Teens with substance abuse problems often have serious depression or intense life stresses, too, further increasing their risk.
Life Stress and Suicidal Behavior
Let’s face it – being a teen is not easy for anyone. There are many new social, academic, and personal pressures. And for teens who have additional problems to deal with, life can feel even more difficult. Some teens have been physically or sexually abused, have witnessed one parent abusing another at home, or live with lots of arguing and conflict at home. Others witness violence in their neighborhoods. Many teens have parents who divorce, and others may have a parent with a drug or alcohol addiction.
Some teens are struggling with concerns about sexuality and relationships, wondering if their feelings and attractions are normal, if they will be loved and accepted, or if their changing bodies are developing normally. Others struggle with body image and eating problems, finding it impossible to reach a perfect ideal, and therefore having trouble feeling good about themselves. Some teens have learning problems or attention problems that make it hard for them to succeed in school. They may feel disappointed in themselves or feel they are a disappointment to others.
All these things can affect mood and cause some people to feel depressed or to turn to alcohol or drugs for a false sense of soothing. Without the necessary coping skills or support, these social stresses can increase the risk of serious depression and, therefore, of suicidal ideas and behavior. Teens who have had a recent loss or crisis or who had a family member who committed suicide may be especially vulnerable to suicidal thinking and behavior themselves.
Guns and Suicide Risk
Finally, having access to guns is extremely risky for any teen who has any of the other risk factors. Depression, anger, impulsivity, life stress, substance abuse, feelings of alienation or loneliness – all these factors can place a teen at major risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior. Availability of guns along with one or more of these risk factors is a deadly equation. Many teen lives could be saved by making sure those who are at risk don’t have access to guns.
Different Types of Suicidal Behaviors
Teen girls attempt suicide far more often (about nine times more often) than teen guys, but guys are about four times more likely to succeed when they try to kill themselves. This is because teen guys tend to use more deadly methods, like guns or hanging. Girls who try to hurt or kill themselves tend to use overdoses of medications or cutting. More than 60% of teen suicide deaths happen with a gun. But suicide deaths can and do occur with pills and other harmful substances and methods.
Sometimes a depressed person plans a suicide in advance. Many times, though, suicide attempts are not planned in advance, but happen impulsively, in a moment of feeling desperately upset. Sometimes a situation like a breakup, a big fight with a parent, an unintended pregnancy, being harmed by abuse or rape, being outed by someone else, or being victimized in any way can cause a teen to feel desperately upset. In situations such as these, teens may fear humiliation, rejection, social isolation, or some terrible consequence they think they can’t handle. If a terrible situation feels too overwhelming, a teen may feel that there is no way out of the bad feeling or the consequences of the situation. Suicide attempts can occur under conditions like this because, in desperation, some teens – at least for the moment – see no other way out and they impulsively act against themselves.
Sometimes teens who feel or act suicidal mean to die and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes a suicide attempt is a way to express the deep emotional pain they’re feeling in hopes that someone will get the message they are trying to communicate.
Even though a teen who makes a suicide attempt may not actually want or intend to die, it is impossible to know whether an overdose or other harmful action they may take will actually result in death or cause a serious and lasting illness that was never intended. Using a suicide attempt to get someone’s attention or love or to punish someone for hurt they’ve caused is never a good idea. People usually don’t really get the message, and it often backfires on the teen. It’s better to learn other ways to get what you need and deserve from people. There are always people who will value, respect, and love you – sure, sometimes it takes time to find them – but it is important to value, respect, and love yourself, too.
Unfortunately, teens who attempt suicide as an answer to problems tend to try it more than once. Though some depressed teens may first attempt suicide around age 13 or 14, suicide attempts are highest during middle adolescence. Then by about age 17 or 18, the rate of teen suicide attempts lowers dramatically. This may be because with maturity, teens have learned to tolerate sad or upset moods, have learned how to get support they need and deserve, and have developed better coping skills to deal with disappointment or other difficulties.

What Is Acne ? A Brief Users Guide For Parents, Teens And The Rest Of Us
Acne is a disease in which the hair follicles on your skin become clogged and infected. This results in one of the three types of acne lesions to form.
The production of excess sebum is the culprit. It causes the follicles to become blocked. The medical community is still uncertain as to what triggers this excess production.
Renata Nyleve Editor of the “Best Acne Solution Products” website — http://www.AcneSolutionsProducts.com — pointed out;
“…Sebum is produced by the sebaceous oil gland and everybody needs a small amount to achieve healthy skin. Sebum helps protects the skin from harmful bacteria by washing it away.
Types of Acne Lesions:
The three types of acne lesions are whiteheads & blackheads (also known as closed and open comedones respectively), papules & pustules, and cysts…”
Whiteheads as the name suggests, look like white bumps. They form under the skin and never reach the surface. This makes them very hard to eliminate. Blackheads grow upward and break the skins surface. This enlarged follicle and the oxidation of the dead cells, sebum, and bacteria have a black color, hence the name.
Papules form when a whitehead burst and the bacteria spreads to the surrounding tissues under the skin. This causes your body’s immune system to increase its fight on the infection making the inflammation worse. They appear as small, firm, red bumps. Pustules form as the body’s immune system continues to fight the infection by sending pus to the area. They appear similar to a papules with the addition of a yellowish white head.
Cysts are the third and final type of acne lesion. They form when a pustule worsens and expands further down under the skins surface. They appear red or purple and are very painful. This is the most serious of all types of acne lesions.
Types of Acne:
Acne can not only be classified by the types of acne lesions, but further broken down by acne type; depending on what types of lesions you have. People whose acne consists of whiteheads and blackheads would have what is called comedonal acne. A mix of blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules acne lesions is called acne vulgaris and is the most common type of acne. The third type of acne is called cystic acne and it is when someone has all three types of acne lesions with numerous cysts.
Who Can Get Acne:
“…While most people associate acne with teens, anybody can experience some type of acne at any age. That said certain groups of people are more likely to experience acne. They include teens, people under stress, people who have a family history of the disease, people taking certain drugs and adult women…” added R. Nyleve.
