Hui People Customs and Culture

Hui ethnic group is China’s most widely distributed ethnic minority, with a sizeable population of 9.8 million. Most of them inhabit in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwestern China, and there are many concentrated Hui communities in Gansu, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Hebei, Henan, Yunnan and Shandong Provinces.

Chinese is the shared language of Hui people. However, they also retain some words of Arabic and Farsi in daily interaction and religious activities. Hui people living in bordering areas of China often use the language of local ethnic minorities.

The habitation of Hui people is characterized by small scale concentration and wide distribution. The Hui people observe Islamic religion, which has a deep influence in their daily life. Usually a mosque is built and becomes the symbol of architecture in large Hui communities.

Costumes

Hui costumes are under deep influence of Islamism. Men usually wear the Hui style hat, which are small black-colored and white-colored hats without brims; most of the Hui men like to wear white ones. Some of them do not wear hats and instead they wrap their heads with white towels or cloth. There are also some others who wear pentagonal, hexangular or Octagonal hats, as a result of the different branches of Islam they believe in and different places they live in. They like to wear double-breasted white shirts, and some even like to wear white trousers and socks to make them look very tidy, bright and solemn.

Women usually wear white round-edged hats and veils on their heads. Normally the young girls wear green veils with golden edges as well as simple and elegant embroidered patterns of flowers and grasses; the married women wear black veils which cover them from the heads until the shoulders; elderly women wear white ones which cover them from their heads to their backs. The Hui women usually wear side opening clothes; young girls and married women like to inlay threads, embed colors, make rolloffs and embroider flowers on their clothes.

History

Hui is the abbreviation of Huihui Nationality. Its ancestors were Huihui people who migrated to East China after the three expeditions by Mongol people in 13th century, and Muslim immigrates residing in the costal areas of Southeast China during the Tang (618 – 907 AD)and the Song Dynasty (960 – 1276 AD). Through long-time communication (such as intermarriage) with many other nationalities in history, Hui people gradually acquired the customs and living habits of Han, Mongol, and Uygur, and developed Huihui Nationality.

Eating Habits

The Hui people are widely distributed throughout China so their diets have developed differently. However, we can generally conclude their eating habits as having the following 3 features.

Firstly, the Hui people prefer wheaten food to rice food. Noodles are their staple food, and they make various dishes out of wheat flour. Secondly, sweet takes an important role, and this is probably related to Arabian Muslims’ favor for sweet taste. Thirdly, under the influence of Islamism, there’s large consumption of beef and mutton in their diet, and the meat of pig, dog, horse, donkey, mule and beasts of prey is forbidden.

The Hui people are relatively particular about beverages. They only drink water from a flowing or clean source. It is not acceptable for people to take a bath, wash clothes or pour dirty water around the sources of drinking water. The Hui people also like to drink tea and use it to treat their guests.

Taboos

The Hui people do not eat pork, dogs, horses, donkeys and mules. If animals are killed by people from other nationalities or die naturally, the Hui people should not eat them. Only those that are killed by the special cook or the imam from the mosque can be eaten. No jokes about food are acceptable, and any food that is unacceptable by the Hui people can not be used to make metaphors; for example, one should not say that the color of chili is as red as blood.

The Hui people always pay close attention to hygiene in their daily life. If it is possible, people should wash their hands both before and after meals using flowing water. Most of the Hui people do not smoke or drink. People cannot smoke or drink in other people’s homes. One should not bare his or her bosom and arms in front of others. While dining together, the seniors should be invited to sit at the honorable seats, and juniors should not sit together with the seniors on the beds or Kang–hot rock bed, instead they should sit at the edge or just on benches on the floor.

Festivals

The Hui people have three main festivals: Hari Raya Puasa, Eid Al-Adha, and Mawlid an-Nabi. All the festivals and memorial days follow the Islamic calendar.

Hari Raya Puasa (Fast Ending Festival) is widely celebrated among the Islamic communities in China. The feast month of the Hui nationality, which is also called Ramadan, comes in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The festival lasts for three days. On the first day as soon as the foredawn comes, people begin to prepare in a bustle. All families get up very early and then begin to clean the courtyard and laneways, in order to create an atmosphere of cleanness, comfort and pleasure to others. All people, including men and women, young and old wear their favorite new clothes. The mosques are all cleaned up during this festival. Big banners with slogans of Celebrating the Hari Raya Puasa Festival and colorful lanterns are hung there in the mosques.

People with low self-esteem try to defend themselves. For example, many people with low self-esteem react in a very aggressive way whenever they receive negative feedback. Because they don’t feel good enough they try to lift themselves up by pressing others down. It may go as far as blaming others for mistakes that they are responsible for.

People with low self-esteem back-talk. In an (often unconscious) attempt to make themselves look better, people with low self-esteem talk negatively about others behind their back. This has negative consequences, not only for the person who was spoken about, but also for the listeners and the speaker.

People with low self-esteem are experts at finding faults in others. People with low self-esteem feel better when they can see faults in the people around them. Therefore, they are experts at finding negative qualities in others. By looking for and finding faults in others, their liking of these people decrease. People with low self-esteem like other people less than people with high self-esteem

People with low self-esteem have unhealthy lifestyles. In order to take good care of your health, you need to believe that you are important enough to be taken care of. People with low self-esteem don’t feel important and therefore don’t see any point in taking care of their health.

People with low self-esteem listen to media with negative messages. Rather than brainwashing themselves with positive messages, people with low self-esteem watch soap operas and films that make them feel like they are not good enough, read magazines that let them know that everyone else is better-looking and lead more exciting lives, and listen to sad love songs about loneliness.

People with low self-esteem are bad at saying no. When they are asked for favours that they don’t actually want to do, people with low self-esteem find it extremely difficult to day no. Rather than risking that the other person would start to dislike them, people with low self-esteem instead take on more work than they would like to do. As a result, they often end up spending their lives working to please others rather than doing things for their own sake.

People with low self-esteem don’t take enough time for themselves. Because they constantly want to please others, people with low self-esteem rarely take enough time on doing things that they enjoy doing or that increase their wellbeing. By doing this, they unfortunately both send themselves the message that they are not important enough, and they don’t develop their self-awareness.

Democracy had been defined as a government of the people, by the people and for the people and when some countries had been writing their constitutions, they had been telling their people that they are establishing a democracy there and from that date the people shall govern the country, the people in the government shall be from the side of the people and they shall be committed to work for the welfare of the people. But if we go deep and people of all the countries who are living in democracies, start having an introspection, they shall come to the conclusion that the definition of democracy is just a paper transaction and no country could adopt this definition or concept.

We know that in all the democracies a set of people have joined the field of politics and they have joined this field taking it a profession, trade, calling and employment and they are not interested in serving the people through whom they are sent to the houses. They invest huge amounts in elections and they invest these amounts just to have profits and therefore, each one contesting elections wants that he should get a place in government and should not remain just an MLA or MP. If ministry could not be allotted due to other contestants, he would like that he should be appointed a member or chairman of some organization having financial transactions so that he too get an opportunity to collect money and compensate himself. The people who remain only MLAs and MPs often found cursing their luck and next time they would not contest election.

We have noted that the people who are in the field of politics are not common people nor they have got any connection with the people. They are a class in themselves and we have found in countries like India where these people could acquire power and once they were in they could establish here family rule, party dictatorship and then individual autocracy. If we read news papers and if we have investigations of all the development works and all the deals at national or international level, we shall find that they people signing or writing these documents had been indulging in scams, scandals, muddles, taking commissions, selling contracts, jobs, quotas, licences, etc. etc. and we have been told that millions had been smuggled to other countries and are being kept in secret bank accounts and most of the transactions had been made through hawala agencies. So such people are not interested in the welfare of the people with whose votes they have been elected. We have noted that only common people cast their votes and rich and powerful people would not like to vote standing in lines alongwith poor and weak people. So the people in government are elected by the people, but they never work for the welfare of the people. On the other hand these people work for the rich and powerful and that is the reason, we should not call such governments as governments of the people, these are actually governments of the rich and the powerful and therefore, rich and powerful people are growing more rich and more powerful and it is on record that the weak and poor people in each democracy in the world are being reduced to more weakness and to more poverty through prices which are raised so that the rich and powerful who are conrolling the trade could turn more rich.

We must take the example of India where democracy had been established on 26th January, 1950 and in spite of this lapse of 60 years in democracy, the people are still illiterate, unemployed, houseless, beggars, living in mud houses, living in huts where no latrine and bath rooms are provided and when they utilize open space, the people coming from abroad call India an open latrine, a country of beggars and a country of poor people. When India is a rich country and it had been called a golden sparrow, it should have turned a rich country because it has got mountains, rivers, minerals, coals, irons, gases, petroleum and jungles which are the minimum requirements for proper development. Actually the people of India could not establish a true democracy, they could not attain prosperity because of unfaithful individuals who had been occupying the seats of power. So people like in India shall be attaining democracy and they shall require another century for this purpose. The present sets of people in politics would not allow that a true democracy could be established in India. Similar is the position and situation in other countries which are calling themselves as advanced countries.

So we can say with authority that none of the countries in the world could establish true democracy and all are misleading the people. In all the countries there are people who are illiterate, who are unemployed, who are houseless, who are poor, who are beggars, who live on charity from the government side and like that and such people cannot be called citizens of a democracy.

People living in he modern democracies know that when these politicians are approaching them for votes, they behave like beggars and when they are installed in chairs, the start behaving like rajas, maharajas, monarchs and the imperialists and then the people who are declared in constitutions as masters of the country are condemned as slaves and these people in chairs are not available to the people. The administration goes as had been established during the days of slavery and therefore, the name of democracy remains in the constitutions only and it is never in operation.

People had been fighting for establishing democracies in their countries, but still they know that the people in power are not from amongst them nor they are committed to work for the welfare of the people. Till sense and spirit of ruling the people remains in the minds of the people in the chair, they would never allow the people to establish real democracy and the people shall never gain the position of masters in their own country. They would never get a chair to sit while waiting at a public office. If we have an eye on the people visiting government offices in India, a man with bear eyes shall say that the people are being treated as slaves and they are not masters of this country. If the present state of affairs goes on, we must accept that real democracy would never be established in any of the country. Establishing governments through votes never means that it is a democracy. Democracy means something more and the people in chairs would not share those rights with the people of the country.
