A service commemorating 46 homeless people who died last year was conducted last week at the Boyle Street Community Centre. Some 170 attendees lit candles for people whose names were not mentioned, but whose lives ended too soon.
Contrary to what many might assume, homeless people do not die from exposure to the cold. Instead, many of the people memorialized at the ceremony succumbed to ongoing medical problems that could not be adequately managed.
Lorette Garrick, executive director for the George Spady Centre, said that people who are chronically without homes perish from addictions, overdoses, violence and diabetic shock with much more frequency than they die from freezing. She said that even those who do not have dangerous medical conditions are still vulnerable due to a lack of good nutrition.
Garrick noted that people who exist on the streets often do not live to an old age, saying that 45 is a long life expectancy. It is estimated that some 200 homeless people have died in Edmonton in the last five years, and that as of 2008, about 3,079 Edmontonians did not have a home.
The city is in its second year of a ten-year plan that addresses that issue of homelessness. Launched in 2008 by Mayor Stephen Mandel, the committee works in many ways to find housing for those in need. Garrick says the housing coalition is already beginning to reduce the number of homeless people. She hopes this program will result in a decreased number of fatalities, beginning this year.
